Practical Typography

Under Butterick's Practical Typography you'll find a highly interesting, comprehensive online book by Matthew Butterick about typography and how to put it to use. The book can be read for free. However, the author suggests a variety of ways of paying him for his work. So, if you find this resource as useful as I do, please don't hesitate to compensate the author for his efforts so he'll be able to keep up his great work. Read more

MemoEasy – Termine online buchen

Sorry, this entry is only available in Deutsch. Read more

Great Rock Singers: Zak Stevens

Having started this little series on great rock singers with James LaBrie naming him as my all-time favourite I must now admit that actually Zak Stevens of Savatage fame comes close to that status. Also being a very talented, technically apt singer, Zak was lucky to be lead singer for Savatage during the better part of the nineties - a band that was both well-known for the awesome feel for melody as well as an unfortunate tendency to be inexplicably underestimated ... Less, but better

Great design is long-lasting. - taken from Dieter Rams' ten principles for good design. This particular principle is especially true for Rams' perhaps most seminal design, the record player Braun SK 4 that's commonly know as 'Schneewittchensarg' (Snow White's Coffin) in Germany: While the product itself is more than obsolete the ideas and concepts behind this design can still be seen in many modern day devices. This is especially true for most of Apple's designs, which draw heavily upon Rams' work. Read more

Why Hyperloop’s awesome and still the wrong idea

On 12 August 2013 Elon Musk published his much anticipated Hyperloop idea. Given his track record, Musk's 'Tony Stark'-like image and claims that Hyperloop would be a 'fifth mode of transportation' that 'could revolutionize travel' people got excited about what his exact vision might be. So, now we know: Hyperloop basically is an elevated tube through which transport capsules move. The tube's partially evacuated to reduce friction, hence allowing for much greater speed (almost approaching the speed of sound) at much lower ... Read more

Great Rock Singers: Floor Janssen

Continuing my little series on rock singers next up is Dutch singer Floor Janssen, formerly with After Forever, now being lead singer for both Nightwish and ReVamp, as well as having appeared on various Ayreon and Star One albums. Floor's a classically trained singer but very apt at singing other styles, too: While the interview is quite interesting, too, you might want to skip to 3:23 for the actual music in the last video. PrettyGoodSync: Find Public Keys For Your Contacts

Encryption software such as PGP and GPG unfortunately has always been suffering from low adaption rates outside of the computer nerd / hacker crowd. The less than stellar user experience of many of those encryption tools has been a major contributing factor to that. However, those tools have come long way both feature-wise and as for their usability, for instance have a look at the formidable GPGMail / GPGTools for OS X that makes dealing with public key encryption a breeze. Nevertheless, ... Read more

Great Rock Singers: James LaBrie

Because I'm very much into metal music as well as I'm into great singers I thought I'd write a few blog posts about those heavy metal singers I'm particularly fond of. First one's probably my all-time favourite: James LaBrie of Dream Theater. These are a few videos that give you an impression of his technical prowess, awesome range and versatility: Read more
